The everyday power bank: what carrying one for years taught me
I carry an Anker PowerCore 10000 whenever I go out, and I’ve been using it for about three years. Here’s what that suggests about choosing an everyday power bank, followed by a comparison of three current Anker options.

What I actually carry
I carry an Anker PowerCore 10000 (model A1263) whenever I go out. I’ve been using it for about three years, and it charges my phone about three times.
The label on mine lists 10000mAh / 36Wh, input 5V⎓2A, and output 5V⎓2.4A.

What that taught me
- 10,000mAh is a useful starting point for a full day out; 5,000mAh makes more sense as a light backup.
- The recharge input deserves attention, too. Mine lists an older 5V input; USB-C input is worth looking for when choosing a newer model.
- My three phone charges are a reference point, not a promise for another phone. The number of charges depends on your phone.
My exact model is an older one, so below are current Anker options.

- Start with capacity. Consider 10,000mAh for a full day out or 5,000mAh for a light backup. The number of phone charges depends on your phone.
- Choose magnetic charging or a cable. The magnetic picks cover iPhone 12–17 series, with model exclusions for the Nano 5K. Check compatibility before choosing.
- Check the recharge port. USB-C is the easiest starting point for a newer everyday power bank. The 313 accepts USB-C or Micro-USB input; the MagGo 10K lists USB-C input up to 30W.
- Consider the weight in your bag. The 313 weighs 7.5 oz, the MagGo 10K weighs 215.9 g (7.62 oz), and the Nano 5K weighs 122 g.
FAQ
How many phone charges will I get?
It depends on your phone. My PowerCore 10000 charges my phone about three times, and Anker says the 313 can charge a phone up to three times. Real-world usable capacity is lower than the rated mAh: Anker notes about 5,500–6,500mAh of usable capacity for the MagGo 10K after battery cell and circuit inefficiencies.
Can I take it on a plane?
TSA’s power-bank guidance says: “Portable chargers or power banks containing a lithium ion battery must be packed in carry-on bags.” Check your airline’s rules, too.
What's mAh vs Wh?
mAh describes battery capacity; Wh describes energy. My PowerCore 10000 label lists 10000mAh / 36Wh.
